AFRICAN WEATHER SUMMARY (21-31 January 2008)

Highlights: Heavy rains doused portions of northern Madagascar. Heavy rains also continued over portions of Zambia and central Mozambique maintaining flood threats in this region. However, light rains sustained moisture deficits in southern Mozambique.

Details: In southern Africa, rainfall was quite variable across the region. The largest amounts (98-434 mm; 95-418% of normal) fell over northern Madagascar and portions of the Reunion Islands. Moderate to heavy rains (53-288 mm; 93-320% of normal) sustained moisture surpluses and flood threats over central and northern Mozambique. Abundant rains (48-115 mm; 113-201% of normal) also soaked most of Malawi. Further to the south, local areas in south central Zimbabwe, portions of the Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa registered 51-157 mm (191-339% of normal). However, rainfall was below average across most areas in South Africa and Zimbabwe as amounts generally ranged between 2 and 55 mm (1-71% of normal). Light rains continued to maintain moisture deficits in southern Madagascar, which has been experiencing one of its worst droughts in recent years. Satellite rainfall estimates suggested heavy downpours (75-200 mm; 90-200% of normal) across the northern areas of Namibia and Botswana, southeastern Angola, and western Zambia. The rains might contribute to exacerbating flood potential downstream into Mozambique. Temperatures were generally 1 to 3 degrees C below normal over northeastern South Africa and Zimbabwe.

In eastern Africa, seasonably dry weather prevailed across most areas in the Greater Horn of Africa from Kenya to Sudan and Eritrea. However, isolated rains (1-28 mm) fell over southwestern Kenya, while the areas along Lake Victoria received sizable amounts (24-92 mm; 94-340% of normal). Satellite rainfall estimates indicated heavy rains (25-100 mm) across most of Tanzania, Burundi, and Rwanda. Temperatures were near average over Kenya.

In central Africa, moderate to heavy rains (25-75 mm) resulted in moisture surpluses over Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Rainfall was also abundant (50-100 mm) over most areas in eastern DRC. Lighter rains (1-25 mm) fell over western DRC and Congo, while seasonably dry weather prevailed across CAR and Cameroon.

In West Africa, seasonably dry weather prevailed over the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea region. Temperature departures averaged 1 to 4 degrees C above normal over western Sahel from western Mali into Senegal, and 1 to 3 degrees C below normal from eastern Mali into Niger.
